SSL Certificate Before You Buy Information
As we mentioned on the main page a SSL Certificate for your web site is a great way to help prevent your site form being used for harmful purposes. However there are a few things your should know before buying a SSL Certificate.
Check WHOIS Information for Your Domain. When you request a SSL certificate, an Approval Message will be sent to the Administrative Contact of your domain name as listed in the WHOIS record, or another email address at your domain such as webmaster@yourdomain, admin@yourdomain or ssladmin@yourdomain. You will specify the Approval Email Address at the time of your order in Step
Contact your web host to insure you will be able use your SSL Certificate. They will need to supply you with a CSR that will then be sent to the issuing SSL Certificate company. In our case RapidSSL® and GeoTrust®. Do this before you purchase a SSL Certificate. If your web host says no, then you are going to either not have a SSL Certificate or you will need to find a new web host that will allow you to have one.
The wording of instant SSL Certificate on some sites can be misunderstood. What they are really saying is that you will get the SSL Certificate by e-mal and not by snail mail.
We mentioned CSR at the top of the list. CSR stands for Certificate Signing Request and your host or system administrator will need to generate one to give to us. This CSR will have the needed information about your site. A pretty good example of how this process is done can be see Here. This example is for Apache + ApacheSSL web servers. Your web server may be different, but, your web host will know what type it is and generate the CSR for you.
After the CSR has been generated, we will send it to the issuing company for approval. If the CSR is formated correctly, they will generate and e-mail the encrypted certificate to you and or us.. This SSL Certificate will then be giving to your web host to be installed.
As we mentioned above, it is not instant but it is relatively a straight forward process of getting a CSR, applying for the SSL Certificate, and then installing it.
So, now that you are sure you can have a SSL Certificate for you web site and you understand the process a little better, it is time to order.
